English Language Arts

This Week: We have officially finished Hatchet! Now we will be working on creating our own survival story:) Students will be asked to write a narrative about a character of their choice, getting stuck on a mountain. At the end of their story, their character gets rescued but they need to show how they found water, shelter, and food as well as any challenges they had to solve in order to survive before getting rescued. Each story will be enhanced with features we have learned in class such as prepositional phrases, exploded moments, and sensory details.  I am very excited to see what types of stories they come up with.

Looking Ahead: After all students have completed their story, we will celebrate their hard work with an "Author's Chair" Celebration. During this celebration, all students have a chance to share their story with their classmates in a cafe atmosphere:) We will also be working on specific grammar and convention skills as well as testing skills once our Author's Chair Celebration is complete.

Math- Module 3: Area and Perimeter, Multi-digit Multiplication and Division

* Please support your student at home by practicing basic multiplication facts each night. This skill is going to be essential as we move forward the remainder of the year. All students have created their own set of flash cards they need to study. Each student was given the numbers where I saw deficits.

This week: We will be starting the concept of division. We will be doing this through learning prime and composite numbers, factors, and multiples. We will also be reviewing old topics so we do not lose those skills as we move forward. These skills include: area, perimeter, multiplication by units of 10, and multiplication of multi-digit numbers.

Looking Ahead: We will continue our study of division by learning divisibility rules and diving into actual division problems. Different strategies will be taught to all students in order to solve division problems. Once mastery is shown in each strategy, students will be able to pick one they like best to show they understand how to divide. This unit is quite long so we will be working on division throughout December and into January.

Social Studies

This week we will be completing our Native American Group brochures and using them to help our classmates learn about the 6 major Native American groups that existed in Ohio. Students have a note page that they will be filling out using their classmates completed brochures. We will be focused on learning where these individuals lived in Ohio, tools they used, homes they created, and food they ate. All students were asked to share some information they learned along with those main topics so we may even have some extra interesting facts to read!

Looking Ahead: After all notes are completed, students will be taking a Native American assessment.  Once we have completed that unit, we will move on to the Revolutionary War and Government topics.

Science

This week we will be completing our Landforms booklet. These booklets will show me all student's understanding of weathering, erosion, and deposition. This is a topic we have been covering for quite a while so I am expecting all students to look at this booklet like their final assessment on the topic.
