ELA/Reading

This week, we will be finishing our book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. As we have been reading, we have been completing a plot line of all of the major events of the book. So far we have covered the beginning and rising actions of the book, but this Tuesday, we will reach the climax of our book! Wednesday, we will complete the falling action as well as the resolution of our plot line. Below is a picture of what we have completed so far:)

Throughout our reading, we will be focusing on the following questions:
  • What does a deeper exploration of Brian’s thoughts and actions in chapters 13 and 14 reveal in this text?
  • What is happening in chapters 15 and 16?
We will continue to use the 4 strategies we have learned to record our thoughts about the events in the book.
  • Somebody wanted, but, so ...
  • I Notice and I Wonder Chart
  • Asking Questions
  • Writing down unknown words on a post-it note along with the page number to look up at a later time.

Along with Hatchet, we will continue writing our final essay for Module 2.

Module 2 End of Module Task

Essential Question: How does a challenging setting or physical environment change a person?

Task: Research an extreme setting to write an informative essay for other grade 4 students to learn how these environments can be challenging for a person’s survival. Be sure to include text-based evidence from the stories you have read in this module and any other texts you have read as research for your extreme setting to support your points. Also, incorporate vocabulary learned in the module.
This task will give you an opportunity to express your understanding of the  Essential Question of Module 2, "How does a challenging setting or physical environment change a person?"
You will demonstrate your ability to synthesize your understanding of extreme settings, while creating an organized essay that uses text-based evidence.

Social Studies

This week we will be starting our studies of the Native Americans of Ohio. Some of the groups we are learning about include Ottawa, Erie, Seneca, Wyandotte, Miami, Delaware, Mingo, and Shawnee Indians. We will start our studies with a stations activity creating a map of the regions each Indian group is located within Ohio as well as labeling the most important facts about each group.
