Math: Module 2 Unit Conversions and Problem Solving with Metric Measurement

All Module 1 assessments will be coming home Monday, 10/7. All students completed the assessment online while also using a paper copy of the test to show their work. After the test was initially graded, I allowed students to correct answers that were marked incorrect the first time around. I did not give students any guidance on these corrections. If they showed understanding through their corrections, I awarded them the points back. You will see a purple score at the top of their original answer sheet indicating their final grade on the assessment.

    Objectives this week:

    • Lesson 1: Express metric length measurements in terms of a smaller unit; model and solve addition and subtraction word problems involving metric length.
    • Lesson 2: Express metric mass measurements in terms of a smaller unit; model and solve addition and subtraction word problems involving metric mass.
    • Lesson 3: Express metric capacity measurements in terms of a smaller unit; model and solve addition and subtraction word problems involving metric capacity.
    • Lesson 4: Know and relate metric units to place value units in order to express measurements in different units.
Module 2 is a shorter module only containing 5 overall lessons. We will be covering the first 4 this week, and will finish up with the fifth lesson as well as a review before taking the End of Module assessment on conversions.

    Writing/ELA:

Objectives this week: Complete our End of Module Essay

Last week we finished our novel Love That Dog. After the novel, all students worked individually on completing an evidence guide for Love That Dog. The evidence guide challenged all students to find evidence throughout the text to show how one character (Miss Stretchberry or Jack) showed great heart figuratively. We will be using our completed evidence guide from The Circulatory Story as well as the completed evidence guide from Love That Dog to develop our first 4 paragraph essay of the year.

Essay prompt: How does one have a great heart literally and figuratively?

    Social Studies:

Students will be working this week to review vocabulary as well as major concepts we have covered this year so far. All students will be working to finish their study guide reviewing the topics listed below during E&I time.
    • Map skills
      • Comprehension of maps
      • cardinal and intermediate directions
      • Map scale
    • relative and absolute location
    • human vs. natural features

Science: Will a mountain last forever?

Your child has learned about weathering, the process when solid rocks break into smaller pieces.  This can happen when plant roots grow into cracks or when freezing water expands in small cracks, exerting tremendous force on the rock to break into pieces.

This week, students will investigate how tumbling rocks can wear down and break apart by shaking sugar cubes.  We solved the mystery, “Will a mountain last forever?”
    • You can support this week’s learning by taking a walk with your child around where you live.  Together you can point out and discuss examples of weathering like cracks in the sidewalk, potholes in the street or bricks that have started to chip away.

    Homework:

    • Reading: Independent reading 20 minutes each night
      • Remember, it is your child's responsibility to ask you to initial the reading log as well as the agenda each day.

    • Math: Homework will be given if students show full understanding of the concept. We will be doing practice problems during class that resembles the homework so they have appropriate support in completing their homework. Homework has the potential to change after gauging student understanding of the concept.

      • Monday: Lesson 1 Problem Set and Homework page
      • Tuesday: Lesson 2 Homework page
      • Wednesday: Lesson 3 Homework page
      • Thursday: Complete review from class

    • Friday - NO SCHOOL
      • Homework:
        • Read 20 minutes one time over the weekend
        • E&I Missing work
          • All students have a list of must do's each day during our enrichment and intervention time. These assignments support the content what we have already covered in class. All students are responsible for completing all must do's be Friday. If they are not completed, these assignments will be coming home with students to complete over the weekend.
