Math: Addition and Subtraction Word Problems

Objectives this week:
  • Solve additive compare word problems modeled with tape diagrams.
  • Solve multi-step word problems modeled with tape diagrams, and assess the reasonableness of answers using rounding.
  • Create and solve multi-step word problems from given tape diagrams and equations.
These are the last three objectives we have in Module 1! We will be using a few days this week to review concepts covered over lesson 1 through 19. After adequate time is spent on review, we will have an end of module assessment where students can show understanding of what they have learned so far. This end of module assessment will most likely take place next week.

ELA:

Objectives this week: Finish answering our focusing question of: What is a great heart, literally?
Wednesday, we are moving on to our new focusing question of: What is a great heart, figuratively?

To help with this objective, we will be finishing our first book of the year called The Circulatory Story. Students have discussed main ideas and details that help to answer our focusing question of what a great heart is literally. Because all major concepts have been discussed with this book, we will be completing an evidence guide to notate what we have learned about a healthy heart.

After our evidence guide we will be diving into a new text called Love That Dog. Through this book, we learn what it means to have a great heart figuratively from our main character, Jack. Love That Dog is about a boy who seems to hate poetry but ends up discovering a lot about himself once he starts writing poetry about a significant event in his life.

Writing:

This week we will be completing our evidence guide on our Focusing Question: What is a great heart Literally. This evidence guide will help students on their end of module assessment writing piece where they have to explain what a great heart is literally and figuratively.

Social Studies:

Last week we discussed absolute location versus relative location. Our next topic was introduced which was Human made features and natural features. We also reviewed concepts we have covered in past weeks such as map skills, and continents and states.

Science:

This week we will be connecting what we learned about rivers to the idea of erosion. Students will be participating in their first EdPuzzle where students will watch a video about erosion and have questions they need to answer based off the video. Since this is our first experience with EdPuzzle, this activity will be done as a class. In the near future, EdPuzzles will be assigned during our E&I to  enforce concepts we have learned and provide enrichment to those who are ready for a challenge!

Homework:

  • Reading: Independent reading 20 minutes each night
    • Remember, it is your child's responsibility to ask you to initial the reading log as well as the agenda each day.

  • Math: Homework will be given if students show full understanding of the concept. We will be doing practice problems during class that resembles the homework so they have appropriate support in completing their homework. Homework has the potential to change after gauging student understanding of the concept.
    • Monday: Lesson 17 Homework page
    • Tuesday: Lesson 18 Homework page
    • Wednesday: Lesson 19 Homework page
    • Thursday: Complete review from class

  • Friday Homework:
    • Read 20 minutes one time over the weekend
    • E&I Missing work
      • All students have a list of must do's each day during our enrichment and intervention time. These assignments support the content what we have already covered in class. All students are responsible for completing all must do's be Friday. If they are not completed, these assignments will be coming home with students to complete over the weekend.
