CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SPELLING BEE CHAMP AND RUNNER UP: ARYAN KAUSHIK AND TOMMY PHAN!

Thursday, January 18th in the Pickerington Elementary Cafeteria, multiple students from our 4th-grade classes competed in our annual spelling bee. The participants were Jaylon' Kincannon, Haroon Choudhry, Jonathon Cibulskus, Aryan Kaushik, Blake Kestner, Eli Kitchen, Tommy Phan, Lucy Shreffler, Giovanni Valcin, Parker Dufort (not pictured), and Anna Kratt (not pictured). There were some very tough words and all participants did an amazing job! I know studying was not always easy but your persistence paid off:) Good luck to Aryan as he continues on and takes the online spelling bee. We are all cheering you on!

Shout out to Lucy Shreffler and Amina Sankoh for attending the staff Innovation Conference! They presented what they were learning during out Tiger Teams to many different teachers from around the district. Great job girls!

ELA:

This week we will be diving into our second book titled Colonial Voices. This book has excerpts from different individuals who were living during the time of the American Revolution. There are some individuals who think the revolution against England is absurd and others who support it. Students will take on one of the roles within the book to present to the class. They will need to understand if their individual is on the side of the Patriots or the British and support their position with evidence in their part.

Next week is Right to Read Week (January 28-February 1st)

  • Monday: Wear Orange
    • Look for pictures on Dojo for our door display!
  • Tuesday: Wear your favorite animal hat/headband and bring in an item for the Humane Society.
  • Wednesday: Dress as your favorite character from an animal book.
  • Thursday: Wear your Pickerington Purple Spirit Wear for our Author visit!
  • Friday: Bring in a stuffed animal and a good book for our mini read-in
Be sure to look at dojo next week to see a picture of our final door display! The kids are really being creative with the animal photographs and I think it will look great once everything is put together:)

Social Studies:

This week all students will participate in a simulation of how the taxes worked in the colonies as well as in England. Students who receive a colonial settler card will need to pay the Tax collectors their taxes. The tax collectors will then pay the King and Parliament. Students will also find out what happens when they no longer have any "money" to pay their taxes with! Be sure to ask your child what they learned during this simulation.

E&I Choice Board Work
Mrs. Burre and I have been trying to help the kids understand the importance of getting assignments done within a designated time frame.
After our class meeting to discuss this issue, there are still some students who are still struggling to accomplish success in getting their work done in the allotted time. We modify the amount of work a student needs to complete based off the time they have designated during E&I for their choice board. It is the expectation, at this point in the year, that students have all of the must do's on their choice boards completed by the end of the week. Even though many students should be completing the assigned materials, they are struggling to practice effective time management as well as organization in order to submit completed work. To help assist students to build their time management skills, we are going to continue to require them to complete all must do assignments by Friday. If the must do assignments are not completed by Friday, students will be bringing that work home to finish over the weekend.
