Reading
As we continue through Module 2, students will continue reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. In this novel, the main character, Brian, is flying from New York to Canada to visit his father when something goes terribly wrong. The pilot has a massive heart attack and Brian is left to fly the plane himself. He eventually runs out of fuel and lands the plane. Unable to get a hold of anyone prior to his crash landing, Brian is alive but needs to survive until he is able to find help.

Writing
We have begun writing our end of module assessment. This assessment asks students to write their own story about being stranded in a mountainous environment. This week we will be developing the overall plot of our story and adding "exploding moments." Exploding moments require the students to explain their setting or event in extreme detail. They will be working on adding sensory details, adjectives, and figurative language to 2 separate parts of their story so, when reading, you can truly sense what the characters are sensing.

Social Studies
This week students will be completing activities in stations to learn about the 6 major Indian tribes present in Ohio after the Prehistoric Indians.
Homework
- Reading 20 minutes a night
Outdoor Recess Reminders
Remember with Ohio weather being variable, to remind your child to be prepared to be outside for recess. If the weather is deemed appropriate for outside recess, students will be outside even if it is chilly or cold out.
Also, if your family needs support over the holidays or could use winter hats, gloves, or you have other needs to contact Miss. Stewart, our school counselor. She has contacts and can help.
Calamity Day Make-Up Plan
As we approach the winter months, please be aware of our Calamity Day Make-up plan:
- Day 1 to be made up on February 19th (Presidents’ Day)
- Days 2-4 to be made up through Blizzard Bags
- Days 5-10 Students and Certified Staff excused from attendance
- Blizzard bags are intended to provide our students with meaningful activities and practice during a day that has been determined to be unsafe for students/staff to be in school. Staff/students will make-up the first day missed on February 19, 2018 (provided we have been closed prior to that date) and then create blizzard bags for missed days 2, 3 and 4.
