Thanksgiving Week

Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours! I wish you all a safe and enjoyable long break celebrating this wonderful season:)

ELA/Reading

As we continue through Module 2, students will continue reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. In this novel, the main character, Brian, is flying from New York to Canada to visit his father when something goes terribly wrong. The pilot has a massive heart attack and Brian is left to fly the plane himself. He eventually runs out of fuel and lands the plane. Unable to get a hold of anyone prior to his crash landing, Brian is alive but needs to survive until he is able to find help.

We will be covering chapters 13-16 this week, focusing on the following questions:

  • What does a deeper exploration of Brian’s thoughts and actions in chapters 13 and 14 reveal in this text?
  • What is happening in chapters 15 and 16?
We will be using the 4 strategies we have learned to record our thoughts about the events in the book.
  • Somebody wanted, but, so ...
  • I Notice and I Wonder Chart
  • Asking Questions
  • Writing down unknown words on a post-it note along with the page number to look up at a later time.
After we read, we always discuss what notes we have taken on the important events. We use our notes to complete our evidence guides like pictured below:) We are starting to get into a lot of interesting parts of the book so feel free to ask questions about what is happening in the book so far!

Along with Hatchet, we will also be starting our final essay for Module 2. Students will read through the Module 2 Task and begin working on their Four-Square Plan in class. Copies of these activities are pictured below.

Social Studies

This week we will be starting our studies of the Native Americans of Ohio. Some of the groups we are learning about include Ottawa, Erie, Seneca, Wyandotte, Miami, Delaware, Mingo, and Shawnee Indians. We will start our studies with a stations activity creating a map of the regions each Indian group is located within Ohio as well as labeling the most important facts about each group.

Outdoor Recess Reminders

Remember with Ohio Weather being variable to remind your child to be prepared to be outside for recess. If the weather is deemed appropriate for outside recess, students will be outside even if it is chilly or cold out.

Remember if your family needs support over the holidays or could use winter hats, gloves, or you have other needs to contact Mrs. Lowe our school counselor. She has contacts and can help.

Homework/Important Dates

11/22-11/24- No School due to Thanksgiving Break.
  • No homework will be given for reading Thursday through Sunday. You will notice it is crossed out in their reading logs. If they would like to read during this break, that is more than okay with me but it is not required:)
